October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I would like to remind you all that breast cancer does not only strike women but men as well.

This month the “Take Your Man To The Doctor” campaign began October 6th, spearheaded by our Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. So ladies while we are always taking care of our men and the families…be sure to take some time out for you as well.

Check out one of the spas in Bed Stuy and have some “me” time after taking your man to the doctor.

This month BedStuy came ALIVE! with BedStuy Alive! Week, Savor BedStuy and the 33rd Annual House Tour. If you haven’t experienced the House Tour in Bed Stuy yet, be sure to do so next year!

This month is also the month of Ghosts, Goblins and Witches!

We must keep our children safe during this time of the year when they go out to Trick-Or-Treat. I’m sharing some safe Halloween tips with you all.

Let’s keep our community safe by becoming involved. If you see something, say something.

A Tremor Goes Through Bed Stuy

Where were you when the ground shook? Buildings swaying, ground shaking , and the earth moving are things people on the east coast are not accustomed to. However today, Tuesday August 23, 2011 in the early afternoon a tremor went through Bed Stuy Brooklyn. It was actually an aftershock wave from an 5.8 earthquake with the epicenter in Virginia. Nearly 500 miles away, the ground shook as residents of Bed Stuy took to the streets bewildered on a beautiful summer day.

One woman was observed praying in the street. With the 10th anniversary of the tragic terrorists events of September 11th nearing, some were quick to think this was another attack.

Earthquakes are rare and unusual on the east coast.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! June is National Ice Cream Month! So be sure to visit some of the local establishments here in BedStuy for some ice cream.

I’m sad to say that one of our favorite Bedford Stuyvesant establishments….Bread Stuy has closed its doors. When Val’s Word! first began 5 years ago, my goals were to foster community ties and support local businesses. Today those goals still stand true. So while Bread Stuy has said goodbye… we say hello. Hello to the new businesses that are opening their doors in Bed Stuy. Hello to the existing businesses that are weathering the storm.

I continue to encourage you all to support local businesses in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn.

You can also look forward to Val’s Word! appearing back in your mailboxes! So we are online, email blasted AND delivered door to door.

May is National…

Health Awareness Month, Barbeque Month and National Bike Month. In recognition of National Bike Month, bring your bike out for The Bike Ride in BedStuy Saturday May 21st at 9am. Join in for a family friendly ride while you ride through BedStuy and check out the beautiful flowers in BedStuy’s community gardens.

This month flowers bloom as we prepare for summer. In the midst of having the very first barbeque of the summer season, let us remember our fallen soldiers who fought bravely for the freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis.

Carol’s Daughter products sold at Chloe’s Beauty Supply

Recently opened in the heart of Bedford Stuyvesant, a black locally owned beauty supply store. Chloe’s Beauty Supply is located on Marcus Garvey.

The store is unlike a “typical” beauty supply store where it’s difficult to move about. The store is airy and stocked with a variety of hair products and accessories. Chloe’s carries a line of hair weaves, wigs and extentions.

Amongst the variety of products, Chloe’s has begun to sell part of the well known Carol’s Daughter product line. This is very convenient for Bedford Stuyvesant residents. No longer will they need to go downtown for their favorite Carol’s Daughter products. Now Bed Stuy residents can purchase beauty products while supporting local commerce in Bed Stuy.

Mentoring Grows in Bed Stuy

Brooklyn CARES has now joined the recruiting circles of National CARES. “National CARES Mentoring Movement is dedicated to recruiting and connecting mentors with local youth-serving and mentoring organizations to help guide struggling Black Children to academic and social success, and to closing the huge gag between the relatively few Black Mentors an Millions of our vulnerable children.”

National CARES Mentoring Movement is the dedicated work of Susan L. Taylor Essence Magazine Editor-In-Chief Emeritus. National CARES began as Essence CARES in 2006 after the Katrina Hurricane devastated New Orleans where the annual Essence Music Festival is held. After Ms. Taylor departure of Essence Magazine, she began working fulltime on the mentoring movement she so believed in and Essence CARES grew into National CARES Mentoring Movement. Poetry Month, Stress Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month, National Minority Health Month, Autism Awareness Month a few more that I may have forgotten. Will you spend your month in April observing any of the National efforts?

We have already sprung forward with our clocks and Spring is in the air. Now that the weather has broken, more of us will be walking our dogs so don’t forget to scoop your poop. Speaking of pets, we have some new businesses in the area with some specializing in services for our feline and canine friends.

Bed Stuy is buzzing with new commerce. Please support our local businesses.

NYC Healthy Chick Official Launch Party

Wednesday February 23rd, the Official Launch Party for NYC Healthy Chick took place at the Houndstooth Pub in New York City. The evening began with an open bar, music and mingling as Janet Cook introduced the NYC Healthy Chick brand to everyone. The mission of NYC Healthy Chick is to empower women to be as SASSY~JUICY~HEALTHY as they can be. Designers Catherine Charlot of Himane and Ilsa of Mel en Stel featured their fashions in the fashion show with stylist Gabriela of Style with Glee.
